Abdominal Ultrasound
- If your appointment is in the morning (8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.): You must be completely fasting from midnight (no food, drinks, gum, cigarettes, or vaping).
- If your appointment is in the afternoon or evening (12:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.): You must fast for 5 hours before the exam.
A light meal is allowed before the fasting period, but avoid dairy products and fatty foods.
What to Expect During the Exam
Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive, and painless procedure. A gel is applied to the area being examined, and the technologist moves the probe to capture images in real time. The exam typically takes 10 to 20 minutes and usually requires little or no preparation (please see the abdominal and pelvic sections for specific instructions).
Pelvic Ultrasound
- Please drink 1 litre of water about one hour before your exam.
- Do not urinate until the exam is completed.
A full bladder is important to ensure the best possible images.
What to Expect During the Exam
Pelvic ultrasound is used to examine the uterus, ovaries, and nearby structures. The exam typically starts with an abdominal scan, where a probe is placed on the lower belly. If the organs cannot be clearly seen with this approach, a transvaginal ultrasound may be performed. A thin probe is gently inserted into the vagina, providing more detailed images and improving diagnostic accuracy.
Others (MSK, thyroïde, etc)
No special preparation is needed.
There are no contraindications for this exam.
